She started working in the business of music from a young age. When she was 10 she was a winner in local contests, and then recorded her first album. She signed to Rounder Records in 1985 and recorded her first self-titled album on the label in the year 1987. She was asked to join Alison Krauss & Union Station together with whom she performed.
